Air India Express flight IX712 from Muscat to Kannur, operated by a Boeing 737-800, VT-AXR, was severely damaged following a aborted takeoff after the crew lined up the aircraft on the right runway edge lights. The aircraft lined up runway 26L from taxiway E7 at 21:32 in night time conditions but aligned with the right hand edge lights and commenced takeoff destroying a number of edge lights in the process. Following a loud bang and a master caution indication the crew rejected takeoff and stopped on the runway. The aircraft became disabled with a hydraulic leak from system A and a flat tyre. Passengers and crew disembarked onto the runway. The OTSB rated the occurrence an accident and an investigation will be conducted.

The airplane was completing a flight from Riyan to Salalah on behalf of the 44th SAAF Squadron, carrying five crew members and 27 passengers, among them locals. While approaching Salalah from the west in marginal weather conditions, the airplane struck the slope of a mountain, crashed and exploded about 48 km west of Salalah. The aircraft was totally destroyed and all 32 occupants were killed. The wreckage was found about 630 feet above sea level. Crew: Lt C. J. K. Schutte, pilot, Lt J. H. Glenny, copilot, Lt G. C. Pennington, observer, Cpl R. Hosmer, wireless operator, Cpl R. B. Boraine, wireless operator.

The crew continued the takeoff and during initial climb, informed ATC of the situation and received the permission to return for a safe landing. On touchdown, the left main gear collapsed and the airplane slid for dozen yards before coming to rest in flames. All three crew members escaped uninjured while the aircraft was damaged beyond repair.
